The City of Atchison has a full-time opening for a Parks & Facilities Superintendent.  The Parks & Facilities Superintendent primarily oversees the maintenance and improvement of city parks, watershed dams, highway right-of-way, cemetery, airport, downtown public spaces, public buildings and municipal swimming pool.  The Superintendent supervises 8 full-time parks and watershed employees, 1 full-time facilities maintenance employees and additional seasonal employees including the pool manager.  

Responsibilities:

Performs general administrative duties including participation in meetings, preparing reports, purchasing in accordance with procurement policies, processing invoices for payment, copying and filing documents, ordering parts, materials and supplies, tracking and reporting employee time, preparing accident reports, disciplinary documentation and performance evaluations, and correspondence such as phone calls, emails, texts…etc. Interacts and communicates with supervisory and subordinate personnel, city officials, contractors, volunteers, special event coordinators, vendors, consultants, advisory boards, other city departments and the public.  Operates a vehicle and has operational knowledge of departmental equipment such as zero-turn radius mowers, tractors, rotary cut mowers, chainsaws, string trimmers, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, hand and power tools, dump trucks, snow plows, trailers, skidsteer loaders, spraying equipment, scissor lift…etc. Has operational knowledge of departmental materials such as pesticides, pool chemicals, cleaning chemicals, solvents, coatings and fertilizers. Refers to policy and safety manuals, maintenance manuals, technical resources, blueprints…etc. Schedules the daily work of subordinate employees and ensures the work is done safely, thoroughly and in a timely manner. Attends workshops, conferences, seminars, trade shows…etc. to stay current with industry trends and/or to maintain professional certifications. Inspects parks and facilities regularly to identify -safety and maintenance issues. Participates in short and long-term planning, develops goals and objectives, assists in budget development and capital project planning.  Procures personal protective equipment such as hearing and eye protection for division employees, provides for safety training, and enforces safety requirements. 

Qualifications:

Required – 18 years of age or older with high school diploma/GED.  Five years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience representing the required knowledge and ability to perform the duties of this position.  Ability to pass a mandatory drug screen upon offer of employment. Must have a valid driver’s license. 

Preferred - Have or ability to obtain CDL Class A or B drivers license. Have or ability to obtain professional certifications in areas such as forestry, pesticide applications, playground safety and pool operations.
