Spires Win Three Straight Matches to Beat Swedes 38-12
The University of Saint Mary Men's Wrestling team took on Bethany College in their first dual of the new year on Thursday. The Spires won by a score of 38-12, with two wins by fall and one by tech fall.
Freddie Barajas and Hartwell Taylor gave Saint Mary the team's first points after winning by forfeit due to Bethany having vacant 133 and 141 weight classes. Then Austin Almager gave the Spires a 17-0 lead after a dominant win by tech fall (18-2) just over two minutes into the match. Johnny Cash Thomas had another win by forfeit for Saint Mary, which made the score 23-0.
The Spires were then able to rattle off three straight wins in the 165, 174, and 184 weight classes. Jackson Jones pinned his opponent roughly midway through the first round. Maxx Demann's 174 bout went the distance, but he was able to hold on to win by a score of 11-7, giving the Spires three more team points. The final win of the day came from Gabe Chesbro as he won by fall with just thirty seconds left in the first round of the match. Saint Mary then dropped the next two matches, one by forfeit due to a vacated 197 weight class, and heavyweight Cody Adams lost by fall in the first round. This made the final score 38-12 in favor of Saint Mary.
